BUSINESSES TRIUMPH IN SKILLS AWARDS

Three companies based in or near Exeter have been recognised in the Learning and Skills Council's inaugural South West Skills Awards at Sandy Park.In the apprenticeship category, Stagecoach Devon and the Manor House Hotel, near Okehampton, won the Train to Gain Large Employer of the Year and Large Employer of the Year titles respectively.
The Cedars Neighbourhood, a nursery employing apprentices, received a highly commended award for providing great practical experience and creating a great working environment that fosters knowledge and the importance of qualifications.
Malcolm Gillespie, the LSC's regional director, said: "It has been fantastic to see so many outstanding individuals and businesses collecting awards.
"Our economy is dependent upon having skilled individuals working across the entire spectrum of vocational learning."
The awards were attended by more than 170 people, including representatives of companies and the South West Regional Development Agency.
Top sprinter Jason Gardener presented awards to the 16 winners and 25 highly commended.

Peter McIver, of Stagecoach Devon, and Corina Marvin, of The Cedars Neighbourhood, will be attending the event where the winners will be announced.
