Working in partnership with parents

“Parents are the child's most important and enduring educators”.

At The Cedars Neighbourhood Nursery the parents and staff work closely together to help plan for their  children's learning. We welcome parents to work alongside us when planning activities within the nursery. In each room we have a large planning board displayed where parents can note on a ‘post it note’ any observations from home, suggestions for activities and any new interests. Children’s portfolios are accessible at all times for parents to access. The folders have information about children’s PLODS (possible lines of direction), observations and interests. At any time parents can complete information in the file and we encourage parents to complete their own PLOD for their child.

Parents have the opportunity to see, first hand, how their child is learning through the use of the many displays, celebration portfolios and home contact books. Staff and parents talk together about current issues at home and nursery and observations are shared.

Parents are also welcomed to join the nursery session at any time to enjoy play with their child at The Cedars.

Parents evenings and fun days are a regular event at the nursery. We feel that it is important that all our parents receive a warm welcome to the nursery and are invited into a safe, comfortable environment where our children can explore and socialise in close contact with the significant adults within their lives.

A  booklet about Schemas is available to help parents to observe their own children's patterns of play by becoming familiar with the features of different schemas.  This helps our parents to have a deep understanding of their own children's behaviours, but also provides opportunities for a more precise dialogue between the parents and the nursery staff about a child's learning.

Parents are invited to join the nursery steering group, the group provides an oppertunity for parents to be involved in the running of the nursery, put their views and comments forward and to help with fundraising events or ideas.

A parent describes the relationship between staff at parents at The Cedars

‘When I stop to think about what helps me to feel involved and included at Cedars, my thoughts turn instantly to the quality of the relationships with the staff and the general atmosphere of openness within the nursery. It seems that the staff are encouraged to prioritise building good relationships with parents as well as the children. Their communication skills and genuine warmth means that I have felt welcomed and relaxed in the nursery from my very first visit. As a result, I have always been able to ask questions or offer ideas, which I might have otherwise found quite daunting. These good relationships are the foundations which have built upon my active involvment within the nursery'
